How does Change and Projects as components work together?
Significant change in IS requires a project
Project must follow a Project Management Methodology and a good Systems Development Methodology (or life cycle) to ensure success
Link development to strategy
What business goal does it help to achieve?
Is this change mentioned within IS strategy?
Identify systems projects that will deliver most business value
What are the information systems cost and benefits
Tangible Benefits
Can be quantified and assigned monetary value
Systems that displace labour and save space (transaction and clerical systems)
Intangible Benefits
Can’t be immediately quantified but may lead to quantifiable gains in the long run (e.g. enhanced decision making)
Systems that influence decision making (ESS, DSS, collaborative work systems)
What is the Key Point of Change Management?
Unexpected change is VERY unsettling for all concerned
Define a System
Collection of elements such as people, resources, concepts, procedures, such that system as a whole has purpose
Define Change Management
Managing any significant change within organisation
How does Change Management work?
Decision = move forward with project
Effect on organisation must be considered (managed using change management techniques)
Strategic plans tells us WHAT the organisation wants to achieve but NOT HOW it will achieve its goals
What is the impact as a result of Changes to Systems?
Results in changes to one or more of
