8. THEOLOGY - SALVATION APPLIED Flashcards
What is saving faith?
(What is faith in Jesus Christ?)
Faith in Jesus Christ is a saving grace, whereby we receive and rest upon him alone for salvation, as he is offered to us in the gospel.
Acts 4:12
Where does saving faith come from?
It is the gift of God
(Eph. 2:8)
What does saving faith believe?
It receives and rests in Christ alone for salvation.
Rom 10:9
Is all faith alike?
No, there are degrees of weak and strong; saving and non-saving.
James 2:9
“But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors.”
Define “repentance.”
(What is repentance unto life?)
(WSC 87) Repentance unto life is a saving grace, whereby a sinner, out of a true sense of his sin, and apprehension of the mercy of God in Christ, doth, with grief and hatred of his sin, turn from it unto God, with full purpose of, and endeavor after, new obedience.
Acts 2:38
And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
In what sense is repentance “necessary”?
It is of such necessity to all sinners, that none may expect pardon without it.
(Lk. 13:3)
“It is of such necessity to all sinners, that none may expect pardon without it.”
How ought we to confess our sins?
Just specifically.
1 John 1:9
What are good works?
(WCF 16.1) “Good works are only such as God hath commanded in His holy Word.”
Eph 2:10
What is the relation of good works to faith?
Good works are evidence of true faith.
James 2:18
“But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.”
Are good works necessary for salvation?
Necessary, but not meritorious.
Eph 2:8-10
Can our good works save us?
No.
Eph. 2:9 - “not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”
Can unbelievers do good works?
Works done by unbelievers can be what God commands, and good to them and others, but, not being from a heart of faith nor according to the word of God or for His glory, hence being sinful, they cannot please God.
Define/defend “perseverance.”
They whom God has effectually called cannot fall away from the state of grace, but will certainly persevere in grace to the end, and be eternally saved. (WCF 17.1)
John 6:44
“No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day.”
Can a saved person later be eternally lost?
No.
Jn. 10:28
“I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.”
On what does a believer’s persevering depend?
The immutability of God’s free election of them in Christ.
