7. THEOLOGY - SALVATION ACCOMPLISHED Flashcards
What is the ordo salutis?
The order of salvation put logically.
Calling, Regeneration, Conversion, Justification, Adoption, Sanctification, Perseverance, Glorification.
Rom. 8:28-29
How would you explain the plan of salvation to an unbeliever?
- God - Holy
- Man - God’s Creation
- Sin - Separated from God
- Christ - Redeemer
- Faith - Jesus for Salvation
Define and defend “effectual call”.
(What is effectual calling?)
(WSC 31) Effectual calling is the work of God’s Spirit, whereby, convincing us of our sin and misery, enlightening our minds in the knowledge of Christ, and renewing our wills, he doth persuade and enable us to embrace Jesus Christ, freely offered to us in the gospel.
John 6:44
No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day.
On what is God’s decision to call a certain person based?
(2 Tim. 1:9) “[God] saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began…”
How can infants be called?
Through God’s mercy and divine choice.
(2 Sam. 12 & WCF 10.3)
Can anyone not called by the Holy Spirit be saved?
John 6:44
No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day.
Is Jesus really the only way?
(John 14:6) “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through me.”
Acts 4:12
What about those who never had the chance to hear about Jesus or are devout Muslims, Buddhist, etc.?
Ignorance of the Law won’t condemn a person, but sin will.
Devout as they are they will go to hell unless they repent and turn to Christ.
(Rom. 1:20)
Defend doctrine of justification.
(What is justification?)
(WSC 33) Justification is an act of God’s free grace, wherein he pardoneth all our sins, and accepteth us as righteous in his sight, only for the righteousness of Christ imputed to us, and received by faith alone.
Eph. 2:8-9
What is the basis of justification?
Christ’s perfect obedience and death upon the cross.
Explain: “Faith alone saves, but saving faith is never alone.”
True faith is always accompanied by repentance and good works.
James 2:24
You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.
When is a Christian justified?
At the moment of regeneration.
What happens when a Christian sins after being justified?
The sin is imputed to Christ.
But we are disciplined by the Father.
How were believers justified under the old covenant?
They looked forward to Christ, like we look back to Christ.
(Rom. 4:1-3)
Defend/define “adoption.”
(What is adoption?)
(WSC 34) Adoption is an act of God’s free grace, whereby we are received into the number, and have a right to all the privileges, of the sons of God.
John 1:12
“But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,”
