What was the Seigneurial system?
The seigneurial system was an institutional form of land distribution established in New France in 1627 and officially abolished in 1854.
Who were the seigneurs?
The seigneurs distributed the land
They were nobles, members of the bourgeoisie
They had to be loyal to the king
They had to build a flour mill
If they sold the seigneury, they had to give 1/5 of sake to king
Keep state authorities informed of affairs at seigneury
Who were the censitaires (peasants)?
They had to work the land
Had to pay seigneur an annual rent
Had to do unpaid labour for the seigneur on occasion
How was the seigneury designed (territorial organization)?
They were situated perpendicular to the st Lawrence river or other main waterways
There was a church and cemetery
What did the censitaires do during the day?
Farm work
Women would take care of children, make clothes, cook and farm
How was the seigneurial system better in New France?
Farms were a lot bigger
People in New France ate better and there was less poverty
