decreases risk of mammary neoplasia, pyometra, ovarian tumors, diseases of the uterus and vagina
cons of spays
- potential increased risk for TCC, osteosarcoma, hemangiosarcoma
- increased risk for DM, hypothyroidism, obesity, orthopedic diseases, incontinence
what hormone can cause pyometra
progesterone during luteal phase
- increased endometrial glandular secretion
- decreased uterine contractions
- decreased proliferation of mononuclear cells
hormone levels are normal with increases in sensitivity by hormone receptors
what is Cystic endometrial hyperplasia
changes to endometrial glands that can lead to formation of cysts
- higher chance of pyo
- can form: hydro, muco or hemometra
most common bacteria in pyometra
ecoli
from GI/poop
pyometra caused by ecoli can lead to
SIRS/sepsis
UTIs
* endotoxin from Ecoli causes damage and increased bacterial binding
when can pyometra occur
within 2-4 months of estrus
CBC of pyometra may show
- anemia
- leukocytosis +/- Left shift
- low platelets- in pts in DIC
chem for pyometra may show
- high globulin- acute phase protein (inflammation)
- low albumin (APP- inflammation)
- azotemia- may have UTI
- cholestasis- elevated ALP, high bili, high chol
post op antibiotics for pyometra
- based on C/S
- 2 weeks or longer if also have UTI
how to diagnose ovarian remnant syndrome
- vaginal cytology
- hormonal assay
- US- shows follicles
how to treat ovarian remnant syndrome
surgery: lapartomy- cut and send to histopath
young dog with urinary incontinence. differentials
