8 - Methods of Guidance Flashcards
What are the 4 methods of guidance?
Visual Guidance
Verbal Guidance
Manual Guidance
Mechanical Guidance
Define visual guidance?
Guidance that can be seen, a demonstration.
What are advantages of visual guidance?
- Illustrates exactly what the skill should look like.
- Helps to build a clear mental picture of how the skills should be performed.
- Used effectively in conjunction with verbal guidance.
- Highlights weaknesses.
What are the disadvantages of visual guidance?
- Demonstration must be accurate.
- Performer must be able to match the demonstration given.
- Too much information given at once could induce overload.
What is an example of visual guidance?
A coach introduces the overhand clear to performers by demonstrating the technique himself and also by showing them a video. He also chalks a circle in the back section of a court which gives the performers a target to aim for.
Define verbal guidance?
Verbal guidance is an explanation of the task.
What are advantages of verbal guidance?
- Can be given immediately during performance.
- Very useful for open skills where performer needs to make decisions and adapt quickly.
- Used effectively in conjunction with visual guidance.
What are disadvantages of visual guidance?
- May be a chance of information overload if too many instructions are given together.
- Lengthy explanations may cause performer to lose concentration.
- Cognitive performers may not understand specific technical instructions.
Give an example of verbal guidance?
A rugby coach instruct his players to run a ‘miss pass’ set play. This would be useless to cognitive performers who would not understand the terminology.
Define Manual Guidance?
Manual guidance involves physical support.
What are the advantages of manual guidance?
- Effective for cognitive performers.
- Useful in dangerous tasks as it improve safety during performance.
- Reduces fear/anxiety and therefore builds confidence.
- Whole skill can be attempted.
- Allows performer to develop the Kinaesthesis or feeling of the movement.
What are the disadvantages of manual guidance?
- Performer may become reliant on the support/aid.
- It could create incorrect kinaesthesis - the ‘feeling’ might not be correct.
- Bad habits might be instilled.
- Performer may become demotivated as they feel they are not performing the skill by themselves.
- Physical contact or proximity of coach may make performer feel uncomfortable.
Give an example of manual guidance?
- During the vault, the coach would support the gymnasts back and assist them to travel over the vault.
- A golf coach may stand behind the performer and, with their hands on top, force the performer through the golf drive
Define mechanical guidance?
Any equipment, apparatus or device used to aid and shape movement.
What are the advantages of mechanical guidance?
- Effective for cognitive performers.
- Useful in dangerous tasks as it improve safety during performance.
- Reduces fear/anxiety and therefore builds confidence.
- Whole skill can be attempted.
- Allows performer to develop the Kinaesthesis or feeling of the movement.
