8 intrusive thoughts in the sleep deprived mind Flashcards
Intrusive memories
reminded of past experiences- triggers memories.
think no think task
First learn association between 2 stimuli. (face and scene)
When face is in green frame- pps must visualize scene.
When face is in red frame- actively avoid thinking about it.
Generally people can do so more than 50% of the time.
Gagnepain et al (2017)
people are equally as good at avoiding negative scenes than neutral
Variation
There is huge variability: Some people are really good. Some people are awful (Levy and Anderson, 2008)
important for understanding PTSD and depression
Top down suppression
retrieval suppression engages PFC which downregulates recollection related activity in MTL via inhibitory top down mechanisms
Yoo et al., (2007)
sleep deprivation reduces the connectivity between PFC and MTL resulting in elevated amygdala activity in response to emotional images.
Relationship between memory suppression and emotion
Gagnepain et al., (2017) look at emotional scenes and rate 1-9 how emotional they are. Before and after supressing memories. Greater success at suppressing negative memories associated with greater improvement in memories. Reduce effective charge,
Does sleep deprivation influence memory suppression ability and does it influence the affective benefits of memory suppression
- SD group reported more memory intrusions
- intrusions became less frequent with repeated suppression (sleep group better faster)
- the benefits of memory suppression for downregulating intrusions were diminshed in the sleep deprivation group compared to the sleep gorup.
- SD had more relapses.
(pps who had fewer intrusions felt more positive about the suppressed memories.)
implications
Understanding PTSD and Depression
- therapeutic strategies improving intrusion control could prevent the development of MDD and PTSD
- by treating underlying sleep disturbances could improve intrusion control in PTSD and MDD.
