8. Higher Cortical Function Flashcards
What are the frontal lobes responsible for?
Motor Expression of speech (usually left) Behavioural regulation/judgement Cognition Eye movements Continence
What are the parietal lobes responsible for?
Sensory
Comprehension of speech (usually left)
Body image (usually right)
Awareness of external environment (attention)
Calculation and writing
Visual pathways projecting through white matter
What are the temporal lobes responsible for?
Hearing Olfaction Memory Emotion Visual pathways projecting through white matter
What processing does the left hemisphere mainly do?
Sequential - language, mathematics/logic
What processing does the right hemisphere do?
Whole picture - body image, Visio spatial awareness, emotion, music
What are the important areas of the brain in language pathways?
Primarily in dominant (left) hemisphere
Broca’s area (inferior lateral frontal lobe) - production of speech
Wernicke’s area (superior temporal lobe) - interpretation of language
What are the 2 broad types of memory?
Declarative - explicit, facts
Non-declarative - implicit, motor skills
Where are declarative memories generally stored?
Cerebral hemispheres
Where are nondeclarative memories generally stored?
Cerebellum
Nasal ganglia
Where does the hippocampus receive inputs from?
Visual system
Auditory system
Somatosensory system
Limbic system
