8 CRANIAL NERVES Flashcards

1
Q

Cranial nerve I

A

Olfactory nerve. S. Allocortex/ limbus.
400 free nerve endings in respiratory epithelium. Travels via olfactory foramen in cribiform plate (ethmoid bone) to olfactory bulb then allocortex.

A

Optic nerve. S. Midbrain
Input from retinal cells which form optic disc then, optic nerve, to optic chiasma (decussates here), travels via optic canal to lateral geniculate body of thalamus and superior colliculus before primary visual cortex.

Cranial nerve V

A

Trigeminal. B. Pons
3 divisions;
V1- ophthalmic branch. Sensation from forehead, eyelid, top of nose. Exits via superior orbital fissure
V2- Maxillary. Sensation on medial side of face, nose and top lip and maxillary teeth. Exits via the foramen rotundum.
V3- Mandibular. Both nerve. Sensation to lateral side of face, ear, jaw and teeth. Motor to chewing muscles. Exits the skull via foramen ovale.

16
Q

What is trigeminal neuralgia

A

Sudden severe shock like pain that courses along the trigeminal nerve divisions. Incidence 1:8000

17
Q

What may result from viral infection of cranial nerve VII

A

Bells palsy, loss of taste, decreased salivation, loss of ability to close eyes even during sleep

18
Q

What may a vestibular schwannoma cause

A

Damage to cranial nerve VII. Hearing loss, vertigo, tinnitus

19
Q

What would damage to cranial nerve IX cause

A

Difficulty in swallowing, reduced secretion of saliva, loss of sensation in the throat, loss of taste sensation.

20
Q

What would damage to the vagus nerve cause

A

Interrupted sensation from abdominal and thoracic viscera. Dysphagia. paralysed vocal cords. Tachycardia.

21
Q

Damage to cranial nerve XI

A

Inability to raise shoulders and turn head

22
Q

Damage to cranial nerve XII

A

Difficulty in chewing, speaking and swallowing. The tongue when protruded curls towards the affected side and the affected side atrophies.
