8 - BRAIN STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION Flashcards
What are the 4 parts of the brain?
Cerebrum, hypothalamus, medulla oblongata, cerebellum
CEREBRUM - how is it divided?
In two halves called the cerebral hemispheres
CEREBRUM - what is the thin outer layer called?
The cerebral cortex which has a large surface layer and is highly folded to fit the skull.
CEREBRUM - functions
1) vision
2) learning
3) thinking
4) emotions
5) movement
HYPOTHALAMUS - location
just beneath the middle part of the brain
HYPOTHALAMUS - function
automatically maintains body temperatures at the normal level (thermoregulation)
HYPOTHALAMUS - what does it produce?
It produces hormones that control the pituitary gland - gland just below the hypothalamus
MEDULLA OBLONGATA - location
base of the brain (top of spinal cord)
MEDULLA OBLONGATA - FUNCTION
controls breathing rate and heart rate
CEREBELLUM - location
underneath the cerebrum and it also has a folded cortex
CEREBELLUM - function
coordinating movement and balance
