7 - AEROBIC RESPIRATION (STAGE 1) Flashcards
1
Q
What is the first stage of aerobic respiration?
A
Glycolysis
2
Q
What happens in this stage?
A
Glucose is phosphorylated to produce 2 molecules of pyruvate, 2 molecules of ATP and 2 molecules of NADH.
3
Q
What is the first step of glycolysis and explain it
A
Glucose is phosphorylated by adding 2 phosphates from 2 molecules of ATP, thus creating 2 molecules of trios phosphate and 2 molecules of ADP
4
Q
What is the second step of glycolysis and explain it
A
Oxidation, when the triose phosphate is oxidised (looses hydrogen), forming 2 molecules of pyruvate.
Then the NAD collects the hydrogen ions, forming 2 reduced NAD.
4 ATP are produced, but 2 were used up in step 1, so there’s a net gain of 2 ATP
