7B.1 Flashcards
how many bones in a typical adult skeleton
206
Endoskeleton
internal skeleton of vertebrates
is it always 206 bones
No most of the times yes
what are the 2 skeletal divisions
Axial skeleton and Appendicular skeleton
Axial skeleton
-bony and cartilaginous parts that protect and support organs of the head, neck, and trunk
-skull, Hyoid bone, vertebral column, Thoracic cage
-typically contains 80 bones
Appendicular skeleton
-bones of the upper and lower limbs and bones that anchor limbs to skeleton
-pectoral girdle, pelvic girdle, upper limbs, lower limbs
-typically contains 126 bones
process=
a prominent projection on bone
condyle=
rounded process usually articulating with another bone (looks like a door knob)
epicondyle=
projection situated above a condyle (usually smaller than a condyle)
crest=
narrow, ridge-like projection
facet=
small, nearly flat surface (cartilage)
fissure=
cleft or groove in the bone
fontanel=
soft spot in skull where bones do not meet
foramen=
opening through bone for blood vessels nerves or ligaments
fossa=
relatively deep put or depression
head=
enlargement on end of bone
meatus=
tube-like passageway within bone
sinus=
cavity within bone
spine=
thorn-like projection
suture=
interlocking joints, immoveable
trochanter=
relatively large process
tubercle/tuberosity=
knob-like process
Bone classification
*long- arm
*short-wrist
*flat-ribs
*irregular-facial
*sesamoid-platella
Typical bone layers deep to superficial
-medullary cavity
-spongy bone
-endosteum
-compact bone
-periosteum
