What is exposure therapy used for?
Treatment of phobias
Define exposure therapy
Treat phobias through exposure to the feared CS in the absence of the UCS
What is the basis for exposure therapy in terms of the types of conditioning involved?
You are trying to remove the Classical and operant conditioning developed in the patient (slide 12 and 13)
Give a general summary of what CBT is
- Focuses on problematic beliefs and behaviours that maintain disorders
- Goal oriented i.e. Specific and measurable
- Collaborative relationship between therapist and patient
- Brief (8-16 sessions)
- ‘Scientific’ approach e.g. Collecting data, testing hypotheses
Symptoms of depression?
- depressed mood
- loss of interest in activities
- can’t focus
- feel worthless
- excess guilt, hopelessness and thoughts on suicide
- fatigue and change in appetite/sleep
Depression treatment
CBT- strongest evidence supporting
Antidepressants for subthreshold depression has POOR risk:benefit ratio
Give a few examples of psychological interventions used in healthcare
Individual CBT- for people who have relapsed despite antidepressant meds
Mindfulness CBT - for currently well patients to prevent relapse in future
Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)
