-Stable at high temperatures
-High viscosity index (95-100 range)
2190 Lube Oil Uses
MRG
Low, medium, and high pressure air compressors
Line shaft bearings
Controllable pitch propellers
Steam Turbines
Equipment with online purification
Main Engines (steam ships only)
Main Reduction Gears (MRGs)
Kingsbury Thrust Bearing (KTB)
Controllable Reversible Pitch (CRP)/
Controllable Pitch Propeller (CPP)
Purifier Efficiency Test
Inlet v. Outlet
Outlet cleaner than the inlet: SAT
Outlet not cleaner (looks worse) than inlet: UNSAT
-Stop and clean the lube oil purifier
Equipment without online purification
Line Shaft Bearings (LSBs)
High Pressure Air Compressors (HPACs)
Low Pressure Air Compressors (LPACs)
Transparency Test
PMS card can be read behind the L/O bottle = SAT
Visible Sediment Test
Stand for 10 minutes (or until all of the sediment has settled to the bottom)
Side for 10 minutes (or until all of the sediment has accumulated along the intersection of the side)
UNSAT Sample if:
-Solid, unbroken line or
-Individual particles greater than 1/8”
Fill, Transfer & Purification System
Stores, transfers, and purifies, and preheat lube oil for MRG & CRP use
Gravity Riser connections
-Top side to bring on new lube oil
Storage Tanks
-Clean oil is stored until needed
Settling Tanks
-Oil is sent for batch purification
Lube Oil Tanks
Receive and store lube oil for future use
L/O Settling Tanks
Recondition emulsified oil by heating & allowing impurities/ water to separate from the oil
Temporarily store oil from the CRP/MRG sump when the sump must be emptied for cleaning or inspection
L/O Purifiers
1 L/O Purifier per Main Engine Room (MER)
Features:
-Vertical belt driven centrifugal separator
-Bowl speed: 8500 RPM
-Self cleaning feature
Purpose:
-Purification of the preheated MRG & CRP L/O sump
-Transfer 2190 L/O from/to storage/settling tanks from/to MRG/CRP sumps
MRG Lube Oil Service System
Lubricates and cools the MRG components, clutch and brake assemblies, and the main thrust bearings
Prevents friction and wear
Prevents corrosion
MRG Sump
Stores oil for use in the service system
Located underneath the MRG
MRG L/O Service Pumps (LOSP)
2 electric motor driven LOSPs per Main Engine Room (MER)
1 attached LOSP
MRG Cooler
L/O Cooler
Single pass shell and tube type heat exchanger
Sea water is the cooling medium
Air pilot regulator valve
Normal L/O Header Temp: 110F ± 5F
