7.12 Steering - 7.12 Steering Flashcards
Systems Steering consists of
Electrical control system
Hydraulic system
Follow up system to provide feedback
Indication of Rudder angle
Mechanical Steering System Components
RAM
Crosshead Guide Rod
Linkage to rudder
Cylinder
Tie Rod
Crosshead
Ratchet Wrench
Stops
Cylinder
Hydraulic Power Unit (HPU)
Provides hydraulic power needed to move the rudder via the RAM
Electric Motor
Main Pump
Aux Pump
Electrical Steering System Components
Two Control stations - Bridge, Aft Steering
Local Control Units (LCUs) - One per HPU
Rudder Angle Transmitter Units (RATUs)
Electrical Pumps (Fill & Drain)
Intended for emergency steering operations to control hydraulic steering system directly
Hand Pumps
Physically control the flow of hydraulic fluid to the desired cylinder
Ratchet Wrenches
Can be used directly on the threaded cylinder ties
Steering Modes for a DDG
Computer Assisted Automatic/VMS External (Not really used)
Computer Assisted Manual (Normal mode)
Backup Manual (Emergency)
Steering Checks
Conducted within 24 hrs prior to any evolution requiring setting of Restricted Maneuvering Doctrine (RMD) – i.e. Sea and Anchor, UNREP
Test operability of steering systems from all controlling station and control/correct variation and error between rudder order and rudder angle
Max variation between Helm and Local Rudder Indicator is 2 degrees
Ship-Specific Steering Check Procedures: MIP 5600, R-7
Steering Safety
Steering stops - Max rudder = 35 degrees
Copper and Steel danger zones
Copper = 37 degrees
Steel = 38 degrees
Helm Safety Officer
Bridge watchstander during special maneuvers
Monitors Helmsman and Lee Helmsman
Ensures all orders from the Conning Officer are carried out smartly and correctly
Monitors EOCC actions conducted by the Helmsman and Lee Helmsman for proper procedure
Indicators and Alarms
Helm and Rudder Indicator
Steering Emergency Signal Alarm
Steering Power Failure Alarm
Low Oil Level Alarm
High Oil Temp Alarm
Casualty Procedures for Steering
Shift Cable (Signals) / Mode of steering control
Shift to other mechanical units
