7.7 pathway integration Flashcards
what is glycogen?
a large branched chain of glucose molecules attached to a central protein.
what is starch
a large branded chain of glucose molecules found In plants such s potatoes, wheat, and corm. its stored in granules inside cell
what ways can glucose be stored if there is excess
as glycogen (animals) or starch (plants)
glycogen stored in the muscle is
used to provide ATP for muscle contraction
glycogen stored in the liver is
able to be release glucose into the bloodstream when is needed elsewhere.
what are examples of disaccharides?
lactose, maltose, sucrose
what are examples of monosaccharides?
galactose, fructose, mannose
why are triglycerides high in potential energy?
since it has 3 fatty acid molecules bound to a glycerol backbone which is high in C-H and C-C bonds which carry a chemical potential energy.
What is beta oxidation?
does not produce ATP but releases a large number of NADH and FADH2 which provide electrons for the synthesis of ATP by oxidative phosphorylation. the end protect is Acetyl-CoA which feeds the citric acid cycle.
