7.3 pyruvate- acetyl-CoA Flashcards
why must Pyruvate oxidation occur?
end pyruvate product still contains potential energy in its bonds and further oxidized to acetyl-CoA
what is the intermembrane space?
the space between the inner and outer membrane space
what is the matrix?
the space enclosed by the inner membrane
What occurs during Pyruvate oxidation?
pyruvate is transported into the mitochondrial matrix where it’s converted into acetyl-CoA.
what is the Pyruvate oxidation process?
fist part of pyruvate molecule is oxidized and splits off to form carbon dioxide. the electrons lost are donated to NAD+ which is reduced to NADH. remaining part of pyruvate molecule is transferred into acetyl-CoA which releases carbon dioxide and NADH.
what results from pyruvate oxidation?
2 NADH released
2 CO2 released
2 Acetyl-CoA released
