7.4 - The Structure Of The Heart Flashcards
What are the two chambers of the heart?
- Atrium
- Ventricle
Which has a thicker muscular wall, atrium or ventricle?
Ventricle
Why is the ventricle thicker?
Because the atrium only has to pump into the ventricle but the ventricle has to pump the blood either to the lungs or the whole body.
What are the valves called between the atrium and the ventricle?
Left and right atrioventricular valves
What are the 4 major blood vessels attached to the heart?
- Aorta
- Vena cava
- Pulmonary artery
- Pulmonary vein
Aorta
The aorta is connected to the left ventricle and carries oxygenated blood to all parts of the body
Vena Cava
The vena cava is connected to the right atrium and brings deoxygenates blood back from the tissues of the body (except the lungs)
Pulmonary artery
The pulmonary artery is connected to the right ventricle and carries deoxygenated blood to the lungs, where oxygen is replenished and carbon dioxide is removed
Why is the pulmonary artery unusual?
Because unlike other artery’s it carry’s deoxygenated blood
Pulmonary vein
The pulmonary vein is connected to the left atrium and brings oxygenated blood back from the lungs
Why is the pulmonary vein unusual?
Unlike other veins is carries oxygenated blood
Becasue the heart is a muscle where does it get its blood and oxygen supply from?
Coronary arteries
