What is groupthink?
A way of thinking by individual members of a group characterised by a strong tendency seek agreement when decision-making or problem-solving
When is groupthink likely to happen?
-Group has high lvl of cohesiveness (to unite as a whole)
-A strong leader
-Lacks procedures to search for and carefully consider or debate pros and cons of alt options
-Group is isolated from outside influences with little hope of finding a better solution than the one at hand
-Group is under stress
What is illusion of invulnerability?
Overestimation of group’s ability to make a good decision with the disorted belief that ‘everything is going to work out’
What is moral correctness?
Belief that group will make the morally right decision
What is collective rationalisation?
Group spends more time justifying decision than reflecting on alternatives
What is outgroup stereotype?
Looking down at ideas from outside the group
What is self-censorship?
Individuals keep personal concerns so disagreement doesn’t happen
What is direct pressure on dissenters
Pressure on doubters to agree with others in the group
What is illusion of unanimity?
Disorted belief that everyone agrees
What is self-appointed mind guards?
How do you prevent groupthink?
-Make a conscious effort to consider all info carefully and accurately
-Consult widely with outsiders with important views which should be under review
-A leader who encourages constructive criticism of views
