What is intergroup contact?
Involves increasing contact between groups who are prejudiced against each other in an attempt to reduce prejudice; can only occur if the two groups are close and have to rely on each other
What is an extended contact?
Sustained or ongoing contact either directly or indirectly over a period of time with a group or individual
What is contact hypothesis?
Proposes that certain types of contact (face to face) between members of different groups can reduce prejudice between them
How does contact hypothesis help?
Re-evaluation of incorrect stereotypes which reduces intergroup stereotyping
What is mutual interpendence?
Placing rival groups in a contact situation where they are mutually dependent on each other
What is superordinate goals?
A goal that cannot be achieved by any one group alone and overrides other existing goals which each group might have
What is equality of status?
Groups must have equal status in a contact situation, contact hypothesis
What is all contact factors considered?
Contact between rival groups may lead to a reduction in intergroup prejudice but may increase unless contact occurs under certain conditions
What is cognitive intervention?
Changing the way someone thinks about prejudice
What is prejudice?
A negative attitude towards another person or social group, formed in advance of any experience with that person or group
