What is person perception?
The mental process we use to think about and evaluate other people which forms an impression
What are physical cues?
Impressions are made by the way people look and the way the act; physical appearance regarding attractiveness is important in first impressions
Why do we make impressions based on physical cues?
We believe that appearance and behaviour reflect personal characteristic
What is the halo effect?
The tendency to allow our overall positive impression of a person or a specific quality to influence our beliefs and expectations about the person in other qualities
What is the reverse halo effect?
An incorrect assumption that a positive characteristic indicates negative characteristics. E.g a good looking person is shallow, self-cetred and manipulative
What is the horn effect?
Involves an incorrect assumption that negative characteristics indicated other negative qualities. E.g A disruptive student is a low achiever
How is impressions influenced by body language?
Silent language and non-verbal communication is behaviour that enbales to make a quick and often accurate judgement about them
How is impressions influenced by behaviour?
Actions we personally observe or actions we learn about from others can be a helpful resource for developing an impression but are not always valids or reliable
What is salience?
any personal characteristic that is distinctive or noticeable and therefore attracts attention
What is social categoristion?
The process of classifying people into different groups on the basis of common characteristics
What is an ingroup?
Any group to which an individual belongs or an individual identifies
What is an outgroup?
Any group to which an individual does not belong or identify
What is a positive and negative about social categorisation?
P: Helps form impressions quickly as it’s not possible to get to know everyone
N: Blind to individuality, exaggerate or overestimate the differences between groups
