What is MSM?
The term used to describe the behaviour of men having sex with men
What is WSW?
The term used to describe the behaviour of women having sex with women
What assumptions may be made regarding sexuality?
That a person has a partner of the opposite sex
That a butch looking women does not need contraception
What is ‘gender identity’?
Someone’s internal perception and experience of their gender
What is ‘gender expression’?
The gender that person interacts as with others and lives in society
What is a transgender person?
A person who’s gender expression differs from their birth sex
What is a transsexual?
A person who strongly wishes to transition to the opposite sex.
What is gender reassignment?
Gender reassignment is where a patient will surgically or through hormones, alter their body to become the opposite sex
Why do LGBT people commonly have poorer health/
Due to discrimination and marginalisation
What health issues can discrimination cause?
Stress, depression, anxiety, low self esteem, substance use, lack of treatment
What special considerations need to be made regarding LGBT people and cancer?
MSM are more at risk of anal cancer
WSW are still at risk of cervical cancer
What STIs are especially common in MSM?
HIV, syphilis
Give 4 ways to avoid discrimination of LGBT people in clinical practice
Don’t make assumptions
Use the correct terms
Be confidential
Challenge homophobia
Define ‘sexual orientation’
Describes what gender you are attracted to which includes feelings, behaviours and identity
