Relieve symptoms by changing maladaptive thoughts, beliefs and behaviours

When is CBT used?
Anxiety, depression, eating disorders, sexual dysfunction, OCD, schizophrenia
Who is suitable for CBT?
Patients keep to actively participate
Those who actively seek a solution to their problems
What are the limitations of CBT?
Findings of efficacy may not be reflective of the whole population
May not work with diffuse and complex issues
Has to be delivered by trained individuals
What is a psychodynamic therapy?
Allows unconscious conflicts to be reenacted with the relationship with the therapist.
What techniques are used in psychodynamic therapies?
Explores feelings
Enhance insight into difficulties
Recall painful past experiences
Who is suitable for psychodynamic therapies?
Patients with interpersonal difficulties
Have to be able to tolerate emotional pain
Have to have an interest in self exploration
What is systemic and family therapy?
Focus on relational context
Address patterns of interaction
Look at family system as a whole
What is humanistic therapy?
Relies on general counselling skills to cope with immediate crises.
Who is suitable for humanistic therapy?
Mild to moderate difficulties related to life events, depression, anxiety or stress
What is the negative triad?
Negative view of the world, self and future leads to changes in a person’s schemata to become a more negative person in general.
