7.2 Compounds Flashcards
What are compounds?
They are made up of more than one type of atom, every compound has a unique set of properties
How small are molecules in compounds?
Very small and they contain very few atoms
What can compound lattices form
Crystal lattices, in the lattices atoms bond very strong to each other
What’s are the main differences between a mixture of elements or compounds?
Molecules in a mixture are not identical
No chemical formula can be written for a mixture
Can solids and gasses be mixed into gasses?
Yes, when small solid particles are mixed with gas, it is usually referred to as smoke/dust
What happens when a liquid mixes with a gas?
It is usually referred to as fog/mist
Can all liquids be mixed together?
No some can’t
What is it called if something can be mixed together?
Miscible
What is it called if something can’t be mixed together?
Immiscible
An gases and solids be mixed into liquids?
Yes
Can gases remain in the liquid?
Yes as bubbles in foam
What happens when solids dissolve in liquids?
They form solutions
What happens if a solid doesn’t dissolve?
The particles become very small and the solid and liquid becomes a colloid
What happens if solid particles are bigger?
The mixture becomes a suspension
What happens in a suspension?
Particles will eventually fall to the bottom of the liquid
