7.1 Elements Flashcards
What are elements?
Substances that are made up of just one type of atom
Air is mostly made up of oxygen and nitrogen
What are metallic properties?
They tend to be shiny
Are solid at room temperature (except mercury)
Are good conductors of heat and electricity
Can be stretched into wires (ductile)
Can be hammered or bent into sheets (are malleable)
What are some non-metallic elements?
They tend to be dull
Do not conduct heat or electricity
Break or crumble when bent (brittle)
How many known elements are there?
118
How many elements naturally occur?
91
What does each element have that is unique?
A name and chemical symbol
What order does the periodic table list the elements in?
Lightest to heaviest
How many letters is the chemical symbol made up of?
1, 2 or 3
What is always a capital letter?
The first letter of the chemical symbol
What does monatomic mean?
Made up of single atom
What are molecules
Clusters of atoms molecules
What are lattices?
Large grid-like structures
What are some physical properties of atoms?
Solid, liquid or gas
Melting and boiling Point
How well it conducts heat and electricity
If it can bend or if it breaks when a force is applied
What are monatomic elements?
An element that consists of just single atoms
Are monatomic elements common?
No they are rare, only 9/92 are naturally occurring elements
