What is the NICE referral criteria for breast cancer?
Referr for an appointment within 2 weeks if:
Aged 30 and over with unexplained breast lump with or without pain
Aged 30 with unexplained lump in axilla
Aged 50 and over with any of the following in one nipple only:
- Discharge
- Retraction
- Other concerning changes
What is the most common presenting symptom of breast cancer?
Breast lump

What increases the incidence of fibroadenomas?

Breast cysts
Palpable discrete lumps
What is intraductal papilloma?
Benign growth in a single milk duct
This causes spontaneous discharge from one nipple only
What is a mammary duct ectasia?
Dilation of large and intermediate breast ducts
Results from shortening and dilation of subareola ducts as they involute
May present with a breast lump or nipple discharge
