7.1 Inheritance Flashcards
Define homologous pair of chromosomes:
Pair of chromosomes that have the same genes, but could have different alleles
Define homozygous:
Two genes of the same alleles
Define heterozygous:
Having 2 different alleles for a particular gene
Define haploid:
A cell with one member of each pair of the chromosome
Define diploid:
Cells with pairs of chromosome
Define genotype:
The combination of alleles a particular organism has
Define phenotype:
The physical characteristic that organisms have because of their genotype
Define dominant:
The allele that is always expressed even if one copy is present
Define recessive:
The allele is only expressed in a homozygous individual
Define monogenic inheritance:
Inheritance of characteristic controlled by a single gene
Define co-dominant:
Alleles that are both expressed in a heterozygous individual
What is the F1 generation
A cross between two pure breeding individuals
What is the F2 generation:
3:1
What is the chi-squared test used for?
To find out if the difference between observed categorical data and the expected data is significant
What is the chi-squared formula?
x^2 = sum of (O-E)^2/E
