7. Reproductive Hormones Flashcards
1
Q
What are reproductive hormones?
A
- Steroid hormones
1
Q
What other hormones are involved in reproduction by the pituitary?
A
- Follicle stimulating hormones (FSH)-Stimulates spermatogenesis & oogenesis, 1 follicle (egg + surrounding cells) develops into mature egg
-
Lutenizing Hormone (LH):
Stimulates testoterone in the testes
Causes follicle cells to develop into corpus luteum, secreting estrogen and progesterone promoting fertilization
2
Q
How are sex hormones controlled?
A
Hypothalamus and anterior pituitary gland
3
Q
What is the Stages of The Menstrual Cycle?
A
- Flow: shed uterine lining (low E & P levels)
- Follicular: Follicle develops & mature egg is formed (High estrogen)
- Ovulation: One mature egg is released from ovary (estrogen drops)
- Luteal: Uterine lining thickens, blood flow shifts down, endometrium disintergrates (higher progesterone and estrogen levels)
4
Q
What are the Effects of Estrogen?
A
- breast development
- body hair
- widening pelvis
- development of sex drive
5
Q
What are the Effects of Progesterone?
A
- Prepares & maintains uterine lining for fertilzed egg
- prevents contractions
