1. Structures of A Nervous System Flashcards
1
Q
What are the two systems of the nervous system?
A
- Central Nervous system
- Peripheral Nervous system
Central:body’s master control unit|Peripheral: links body to world
2
Q
What are the properties of the Central Nervous System?
A
- Consists of the spinal cord, brain and brain stem
- Spinal cord has a column of nerves between brain stem and the peripheral nervous system
- Brain stem connects spinal cord to brain
3
Q
What is the Pupose of the Central Nervous System?
A
- Takes in sensory messages and sends out messages to the muscles and glands
4
Q
What are the properties of the Peripheral Nervous System?
A
- Consists of the automatic nervous system and somatic nervous system. The automatic system in depth has two systems within: the sympathetic system and parasympathetic system.
5
Q
What is the purpose of the Peripheral Nervous System?
A
- The autonamic system regulates the involuntary things we do (ie. heart beat, breathing, blinking, peristalisis)
- In depth, the automatic system has a sympathetic system that prepares body for fight or flight and parasympathetic system conserves energy.
- The somatic system regulates voluntary things (walking, skeletal muscles)
