Discuss the context of the French reformation?

A

1500s: between 40-50% of French nobles attracted to Protestantism became Calvinistic and wanted the right to choose the religion of their areas

Huguenots were French Protestants (Calvinist) - persecuted

Francois I: ruler of France at the time.
Succeeded by his son, Henry II who continued with his fathers policies

Increasing tension between Catholics and Protestants.

Edict of Nantes?

A

Issued by Henry IV in 1598- guaranteed civil rights for Huguenots. Paris became off limits to Protestants.

  • ensured freedom of public worship
  • right of assembly
  • admission to public offices and universities
  • permission to maintain fortified towns
  • significance: created a state within a state
