Who was Desiderius Erasmus and what was he known for?
A humanist who hoped that their work would bring about reformation in the church. Erasmus was leader of the humanists. In short, what Erasmus sought was the reformation of customs, the practice of decency and moderation, an inner devotion shaped by learning and meditation and a church that encouraged these things.
Attacked corruption in the church
Seeking after a reformation after a humanistic design, when the reformation finally broke out, he found himself and his followers divided. The reformation that broke out was an entirely new platform and while he never took sides, his teachings and approach would later be hailed by Catholicism and Protestantism alike.
