A

What are the porphyrias?

A

Group of diseases caused by abnormal haem metabolism - genetic mutations cause enzyme blocks.

The ones we need to know:

Acute intermittent porphyria (acute attacks, no skin symptoms)

Porphyria cutanea tarda

Erythropoietic protoporphyria (both present as photosensitivity)
