What is a lesion?
Small area of disease
What is an eruption / rash?
Widespread area of disease, usually involving several lesions
What is a macule?
Flat, circumscribed, non-palpable lesion
usually associated with colour change e.g Cafe au lait macules
What is a papule?
Small, circumscribed, palpable lesion <5mm in size
What is a nodule?
Small, circumscribed, palpable lesion > 5mm in size
What is a vesicle?
Blister of clear fluid, < 5mm
What is a bulla?
Blister of clear fluid, > 5mm
What is a patch?
A macule > 2cm in diameter
What is a plaque?
A raised patch
What is a pustule?
A pus filled blister
What is a cyst?
Pus-filled cavity lined by epithelium
What is a wheal?
Transitory bubble of oedema usually associated with urticaria
What is an ulcer?
Circumscribed area of skin loss penetrating the dermis
