How does corona spread?
Survives for several hours outside the human body, infects cell lining in the airways and gut
droplet spread
Describe the symptoms of corona?
May be asymptomatic
fry cough, fever, fatigue, loss of smell and taste
Rarely causes runny nose
How long is the corona incubaiton period?
Average 5 days (1-14)
Describe the outcomes of corona?
75% have mild response
25% are fairly unwell
5% of them go on to develop a SARS 7-10 days after (acute immune response)
What chronic health problems tend to cause death from corona?
Cardiovascular disease Diabetes Chronic respiratory disease Hypertension Cancer People on steroid therapy/immunotherapy
What are the best ways of stopping the chain of infection?
Wash hands with soap and hot water
catch coughs and sneezes
avoid touching your face
disinfect surfaces (door handles, taps, table tops etc)
What is contact tracing?
Interview the case thoroughly after a patient has tested positive. Speak to contacts and advise self isolation.
How do you test for corona?
Use a PCR test that detects viral nucleic acid but can remain positive up to 6 weekds
How can an individual have a false positive?
Due to inaccurate swabbing or problems of testing in the labs
What is meant by test trace isolate and support?
Person identified as having symptoms
Initial assessment undertaken online or by phone
Patient tested and close contacts identified
If test positive patient is supported and contacts as asked to self isolate for 14 days
What factors increase corona virus spread?
Direct personal contact with someone
Close range long contact (e.g. within 2m for over 15 mins)
Frequent contact with corona cases
Poor hygiene etiquette
Environment (enclosed small indoor areas)

Where they spent time
Who they spent time with?
Participation in activities and events

What are the problems of contact tracing?
Involves dealing with the public (anxieties and worries)
