What is method of accessing negative automatic thoughts?
Three/seven column thought record
How can thinking errors be used in CBT?
Use alongside thought record so patient can distance themselves and analyse own thoughts, shows unhelpful thinking
What is all or nothing thinking?
View a situation in only two categories, instead of continuum
What is catastrophising?
Predict the future negatively without considering more likely outcomes
Describe what discounting the positives means:
Telling yourself that positive experiences, deeds and qualities do not count
What is emotional reasoning?
Think something must be true because you ‘feel’ it so strongly, ignoring or discounting evidence to contrary
What is labelling?
Fixed label on yourself or others without considering that the evidence might more reasonably lead to a less disastrous conclusion
What is magnification/minimisation?
Magnify negative aspects and/or minimise positives
What is a mental filter?
Pay undue attention to one negative detail rather than seeing the whole picture
What is mind reading in terms of thinking errors?
Believe you know what other are thinking without considering more likely possibilities
What is overgeneralisation?
Sweeping negative conclusion that goes far beyond current situation
What is personalisation in terms of thinking errors?
Believe others are behaving negatively because of you e.g. grumpy plumber so must be annoyed at you
What are imperatives?
Should or must statements and overestimate how bad it is if you go against these
What is tunnel vision in terms of thinking errors?
Only see negative aspects of a situation
