Q

Outline the sequence of events that occurs to stimulate erythropoiesis if someone is hypoxic.

A
  1. (Decreased RBCs)
  2. Kidney (and Liver) release EPO (erythropoietin)
  3. EPO (erythropoietin) stimulates red bone marrow–> enhances erythropoiesis

Q

What 3 factors may cause reduced erythropoiesis?

A
  1. Haemostatic loop malfunction (lack of response)
    1. Eg Chronic Kidney disease- stops making EPO
  2. Empty bone marrow
    1. Chemo/toxic insult (parvovirus infection)
  3. Marrow infiltrated
    1. Cancer cells/fibrous tissue

Q

What may cause dyserythropoiesis? (2)

A
  1. Anaemia of Inflammation/Chronic Disease
    1. Iron not released for use, reduced RBC lifespan
  2. Myelodysplastic syndromes
    1. Production of abnormal clones of marrow stem cells
      1. (Cell can’t get out of bone marrow)
