What would the results be for investigations for suspected anaemia of chronic disease? (4)
A
- Normocytic, normochromic or microcytic anaemia
- Normal/high ferritin
- Normal/high reticulocyte haemoglobin content
- CRP often elevated

How is anaemia of chronic disease treated?
A
- Treat underlying condition
- If associated renal failure- use recombinant human erythropoietin
- Ensure Vit B12 folate and iron stores are adequate (otherwise no point giving EPO)
- Transfuse ONLY IF ALL ELSE FAILS

What is Felty’s syndrome?
A
Triad:
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Splenomegaly
- Neutropenia (secondary to splenomegaly, peripheral destructuon of neutrophils, failure of bone marrow to produce neutrophils)
