7 - Airplane & Systems Description Flashcards
The fuselage construction design is referred to as a semimonocoque. Explain.
It’s conventional formed sheet metal bulkhead (metal separating major sections), stringer, and skin.
What kind of skin is used for the Cessna 172s?
Aluminum
How should you move the plane on the ground?
Most easily done with a tow bar to the nose gear strut.
If that’s not required or pushing is required, use the wing struts as push points. NOT vertical or horizontal surfaces.
If you want to pivot the plane around the main landing gears, what do you do?
Press down on a tailcone bulkhead just foward of the horizontal stabilizer. NOT the skin in between the bulkheads
What is the shock system used for the landing gear?
Tubular spring steel main landing gear struts
And the air/oil nose gear shock strut
Engine operation is monitored by what 3 instruments?
- Oil pressure/temperature indicator
- Tachometer
- Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) Indicator
The low oil pressure switch is connected to the Hobbs meter. When is the circuit completed?
The circuit from the low oil pressure switch and the Hobb is completed when pressure exceeds 20 PSI, indicating the engine is running.
Never lean using EGT when operating at more than what power setting?
Never lean using EGT when operating at more than 75% power.
The engine should not be operated on less than how many quarts of oil?
Do not operate the engine on less than 5 quarts of oil. For extended flight, fill to eight quarts.
Briefly describe the ignition and starter system
Two engine driven magnetos with 2 spark plugs each in each cylinder.
Which lights should not be used when flying through clouds or overcast?
Strobes and flashing beacon should not be used when flying through clouds or overcast - particularly at night.
It can cause vertigo and loss of orientation
Whats the rule for resetting breakers?
Check for indication of short circuit (smoke or odor). If none, proceed to reset:
Turn off power if possible to component receiving power.
Reset breaker.
Try turning power back on.
If breaker opens again, DO NOT reset it.
Which instruments are ran off the pitot-static system?
Ram air to:
Airspeed indicator
Static pressure to:
Airspeed indicator
Vertical Speed Indicator
Altimeter
Which instruments are ran off the vacuum system?
Provides suction to operate the:
attitude indicator
directional indicator
