1620-Mayflower Compact, an agreement between the people on the Mayflower to follow the rules that they agreed upon. First self government in the colonies.
1776- Declaration of Independence- written by Thomas Jefferson, the colonies declared their independence from Great Britain.
1777-1783 American Revolution- the time period that the colonist fought the British for independence.
1787- Constitution- a document written by James Madison to replace the flawed Articles of Confederation to set up the system of government we know today.
1803- Louisiana Purchase- President Thomas Jefferson purchased the Louisiana Territory from France. Doubled the size of the United States.
1861-1865 Civil War- war between the states fought primarily due to slavery while Abraham Lincoln was president.
1865-1877 Reconstruction- time period that the United States government took to rebuild the southern states.

What is the Legislative Branch?

A

The Congress has the responsibility of creating laws and is divided between the House of Representatives and Senate. Congress can override vetoes with 2/3 vote. Congress also approve federal judges. (all have checks and balances)

A

Courts that interpret the laws. The Supreme Court, Courts of Appeal, and District Court can declare presidential acts are unconstitutional. The Courts can also declare laws unconstitutional. (all have checks and balances)

A

The idea that it was the United States destiny to expand from the Atlantic to the Pacific. They believed in spreading religious freedom and wanted the natural resources.
