During the bus tour of Mexico the class stopped at the Plaza de Las Tres Culturas or the Plaza of the Three cultures, explain the importance of this place.
-The Plaza shows the influence of the three cultures of Mexico: (1) the Aztec Indians, (2) the Spanish, and (3) Modern Day Mexico.
Why did the USA build the Panama Canal?
-To make a shorter route from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. Built in 1914 between North and South America.
What was the purpose for the Spanish explorers in the Americas?
-They were searching for the 3G’s … God, Gold, and Glory.
Explain the two cultures in Canada and what problems have they had.
-There was controversy over the official language. It is currently French and English.
Compare and contrast transportation corridors to transportation barriers.
- Transportation Corridors: Anything that makes travel quick and easy (ex. rivers, oceans, and canals)
- Transportation Barriers: Anything that gets in the way of travel (ex. mountains, canyons, waterfalls, deserts)
Ex. Panama Canal creates a short cut
Ex. Amazon Rainforest full of frees makes it hard to settle and travel
Who were the Aztec and what happened to them?
-Aztecs were a native tribe in Central Mexico that was conquered by the Spanish Conquistador Hernan Cortez.
During the colonization of Mexico, Central America and South America, what cultural borrowing occurred and how?
-The Spaniards forced their religion (Roman Catholic) and language (Spanish) on the natives of Mexico, Central America and South America.
Explain inalienable rights and what are they?
-Rights that you were born with and no one can take away. Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Included in the Declaration of Independence.
Describe the rights and responsibilities of a citizen.
-Voting, serving on juries, obeying the laws, paying taxes, serving in the military.
What was Manifest Destiny?
-The idea that it was the US destiny to expand from the Atlantic to the Pacific. They believed in spreading religious freedom and wanted resources that were in the west.
Explain Checks and balance using an example.
-Our three branches of government monitor each other to keep one branch from becoming too powerful … keeps things equal and fair.
EXAMPLE: When Congress passes a law, the president can sign it or veto it (not sign) but Congress can still pass a law with a 2/3 majority vote.
Define popular sovereignty.
-When the people hold the final authority (say-so) by participating in the election process by voting.
What was the purpose of the Declaration of Independence and who wrote it?
-(1776) Written by Thomas Jefferson
The colonies declared their independence from Great Britain. The Dec of Indp listed the colonies grievances (complaints) against King George III … (break up letter).
What was the purpose of the US Constitution and who wrote it?
-(1787) Written by James Madison
Replace the flawed Articles of Confederation to set up the system of government as we know it today.
What was the purpose of the Emancipation Proclamation?
-Issued by Abraham Lincoln
It freed the slaves in the South
Compare and contrast the government of Canada to the government of the United States.
- Both governments are limited and have a republic.
- Canada is part of the British Common Wealth and the US is not.
Compare limited government to unlimited government.
- *Unlimited Government
- The people in control do not have to obey the laws … they have UNLIMITED power
- citizens have few or no freedoms

- leader does what is best for him as the primary focus

Explain the effects of deforestation.
- Less trees means increase in Carbon Dioxide (greenhouse effect) accelerating climate and weather changes
- Soil changes (erosion destruction)
- Water cycle changes and destruction
- Loss of biodiversity (Plants and Animals destroyed)
