6.8 Bearings Flashcards
What is the purpose of a bearing?
Bearings support moving parts of aircraft such as engines, wheels that rotate at high speed.
The two main loads that bearings support on an aircraft are?
Thrust load (axial load)
Radial load
What is the most common type of bearing used on aircraft?
What type of loads will straight roller bearings support?
Straight roller bearings support radial loads only
What type of loads will tapered roller bearings support?
Tapered roller bearings support radial laods and axial loads in one direction only.
What is the purpose of a cage in a ball bearing?
Hold balls in place and prevent them from hitting off each other
What material is a cage made from?
Brass or glass fibre reinforced polyamide
What material is a bearing race made from?
High Carbon Steel with case hardened raceways or special corrosion resistant steel alloys or tool steel
Where are needle bearings usually used?
Purely Radial loads
What part of a needle bearing is missing compared to other standard bearings?
Inner ring
What type of material would normally be used to manufacture plain bearings?
Non-ferrous material, normally phosphur bronze
When talking about aircraft bearings, what is fluid damping?
Functions to dampen out high dynamic loads and the vibration from a rotating assembly using a thin film of oil
Where would a fluid-damped bearing normally be used?
Compressor or turbine support bearing
Where would you find the P/N of a bearing?
Part number of P/N of a bearing can be found in the IPC
Illustrated Parts Catalogue
Why type of bearing can be used where the supporting shaft acts as the inner race?
