6.7 Response to infection continued Flashcards
1
Q
What is active immunity
A
- Type of immunity your body gets after making its own antibodies after being stimulated by an antigen
2
Q
What is passive immunity
A
- Type of immunity you gain when giving antibodies from another organism
3
Q
Explain how treatment with inactivated poliovirus cause the body to produce antibodies to survive
A
- Inactive polio has antigens on surface which will bind to complimentary b cell receptor
- Therefore, B cell will become the APC
- Active T helper cell will bind to APCs and produce cytokines
- Which causes the B cell to divide into plasma cells that secrete antibodies
4
Q
What are the pros of vaccination
A
- Gives protection to the individual of disease
- Pool of infection is reduced and so herd immunity protects those who are not vaccinated
- Cost is kept to a minimum
5
Q
What are the cons of vaccination
A
- Some attenuated pathogens are cultured in eggs, this may cause allergic reactions for some
- Some children have extreme immune response to vaccination
- May only provide benefit to society and individuals
6
Q
What is heard immunity
A
- Where enough people have been vaccinated so that transmission is unlikely
