Purulent infection deep within Striated Muscle
How does Pyomyositis often manifest itself?
As an Abscess
What is the infection related to?
Infection is often secondary to seeding into damaged muscle
How often are multiple sites involved?
15% of the time
What are the common sites of Pyomyositis?
- Thigh
- Calf
- Arms
- Gluteal Region
- Chest Wall
- Psoas Muscle
What are the predisposing factors of Pyomyositis?
- Diabetes Mellitus
- HIV/Immunocompromised
- Intravenous Drug Abuse
- Rheumatological Disease
- Malignancy
- Liver Cirrhosis
How does Pyomyositis present?
- Pain
- Woody induration of affected muscle
- Fever
Note- if untreated can lead to Septic Shock and Death
What is the most common causative organism of Pyomyositis?
Staphylococcus Aureus
Other than Staphylococcus Aureus, what organisms can cause Pyomyositis?
- Other Gram Positives
- Gram Negatives
- Myscobacterium Tuberculosis
- Fungal Infections
What investigation is done for Pyomyositis?
- CT

What is the treatment of Pyomyositis?
- Drainage
2. Antibiotic Cover (depending on Gram Stain and Culture Results)
