The use of banned performance-enhancing drugs by athletic competitors
What are the social reasons for drug taking to enhance performance?
- win ethic
- fame and fortune at elite level
- pressure to win
- poor role models
- firm belief they won’t be caught
Example of illegal drugs
Anabolic steroids
Beta-blockers
EPO
What are anabolic steroids?
Artificially produced hormknes
What are beta-blockers?
Decrease anxiety by counteracting the adrenaline that interferes with performance by preventing it from binding to nerve receptors
What is EPO?
A natural hormone produced by the kidneys to increase red blood cells. Causes an increase in haemoglobin levels
Why are anabolic steroids used?
- they store protein and promote muscle growth which increases strength and power
- leads to less fat in muscles (lean body weight)
- decreases fatigue = improves the body’s capacity to train for longer at a higher intensity
Why are beta-blockers used?
- improves accuracy by steadying nerves
- decreases HR and trembling hands
- they widen arteries to increase blood flow
Why is EPO used?
- stimulates red blood cell production
- more work can be performed
- increases endurance and the onset of fatigue
- recover more quickly from training
What are the side effects of anabolic steroids?
Liver damage
Acne
Behaviour changes
What are the side effects of beta-blockers?
Tiredness
Slower HR
What are the side effects of EPO?
Blood clotting
Strokes
Death
Negative implications to the sport of drug taking
- threatens the spirit and integrity of sport
- it’s cheating
- damages reputation and interest
- provides negative role models for young people
Strategies to decrease drug taking (DOPING)
Drug free culture created by education programmes
Organisations for drug detection
Punishments harsher
Investment into testing
Name and shame negative role models
Guilty lose funding and sponsorship
Reasons for the legislation of drugs
- drug testing is expensive and time consuming
- drugs can’t always be detected
- it’s a personal choice
- increases standards
