3.1 Injury Prevention And The Rehabilitation Of Injury (Part 1) Flashcards
What are the 2 types of sports injuries?
Acute
Chronic
What are the signs of acute injuries?
- sudden, severe pain
- swelling
- not able to bear weight
- restricted movement
- protruding bone
Define acute injury
A sudden injury caused by a specific impact or traumatic event where a sharp pain is felt immediately
Types of acute injuries
Fractures
Dislocations
Strains
Sprains
Explain how fractures occur
A simple/closed fracture is a clean break to a bone, whereas a compound/open fracture is when the soft tissue or skin has been damaged.
What are the 6 types of fractures?
Comminuted - bone breaks into 3 or more pieces
Spiral - a winding break
Longitudinal - break occurs along the length of the bone
Buckle - bone deforms but doesn’t break (occurs in children)
Hairline - partial fracture
Greenstick - bone only fractures on one side
How do dislocations occur?
When the ends of bones are forced out of position
How do strains occur?
When muscle fibres are stretched to far and tear
When do sprains occur?
Where the ligament is stretched to far or tears
What are the signs of chronic injuries?
- pain when exercising
- dull ache at rest
- swelling
What are the types of chronic injuries?
- Achilles tendonitis
- stress fracture
- tennis elbow
What is Achilles tendonitis?
An over-use injury that causes pain and inflammation of the tendon
When do stress fracture occur?
When muscles become fatigued so they are no longer able to absorb the shock of exercise
What is ‘tennis elbow’?
When the muscles and tendons become inflamed and tiny tears occur
What is the medical term for ‘tennis elbow’?
Lateral epicondylitis
