What do some cancers produce?
Increased amounts of a characteristic protein
Biopsy
A surgical removal of cells or fluid for analysis
Needle Biopsy
Removal is made using a needle
Laparoscope
Surgical instrument with a light, camera, and a small scalpel
Chemotherapy
Drugs that selectively kill dividing cells with a combination of different drugs (“cocktail”)
How does Chemotherapy effect the body?
It kills normal diving cells such as hair follicles, bone marrow, and the stomach lining
Radiation Therapy
Use of high-energy particles to destroy cancer cells
How does Radiation Therapy effect cancer cells?
It damages their DNA so they can’t continue to divide or grow
When is Radiation Therapy usually performed?
Typically after surgical removal of a Tumor
Remission
When a person remains cancer free after treatment for 5 years
How long must it be after treatment for a cancer patient to be seen as cured?
10 years
