6.4 peroxisomes Flashcards
a peroxisome
a specialized metabolic compartment that is bounded by a single membrane
function
transfer hydrogen from various substrates to oxygen (O2)
-produces hydrogen peroxide as a byproduct (H2O2)
-
peroxisomes: break down fat
-some peroxisome use O2 to break down fatty acids into smaller molecules that can be transported to the mitochondria (fuel for cellular respiration)
PEROXISOMES : liver
detoxify alcohol and stuff by transferring hydrogen from the poisons to oxygen
glyoxysomes:
specialized peroxisomes found in fat storing tissues of plant seeds
- contain enzymes that start the conversion of fatty acids to sugars
- seedlings use this sugar until they can make their own
peroxisomes don’t bud from the endomembrane system, they grow larger
by incorporating proteins made primarily in the cytosol
lipids made in the ER
and lipids synthesized within the peroxisome itself
