6.4: Anatomy & Physiology: Circulatory Systems ๐ซ Flashcards
๐ซ Heart: Left Pump
Receives oxygenated blood from the lungs and sends it throughout the body.
Heart
A muscular organ with two pumps, one on the left side and another on the right.
๐ซ Heart: Right Pump
Receives deoxygenated blood from the body and sends it to the lungs to drop off carbon dioxide and picks up oxygen on its way to the left side.
Septal Wall
Divides the heart into left and right sides.
Pericardium
A fluid-filled sac that surrounds and protects your heart.
Endocardium
The smooth, thin lining on the inside of your heart.
Myocardium
The thick middle, muscular layer of the heart.
Epicardium
The outermost layer of the heart and the innermost layer of the pericardium.
Artia (atrium)
The two upper chambers of the heart. They pump blood into the chambers of the heart just before it contracts.
Ventricles
The lower and larger chambers of the heart. They receive blood from the atria and send it out of the heart during contraction.
Heart Valves
One-way valves between the atria and the ventricles that allow blood to move in a downward direction into the ventricles during atrial contraction.
Preload
Itโs the amount of blood in the heartโs ventricles just before they contract.
Afterload
The resistance the heart must overcome during ventricular contraction.
Arteries
Carry blood away from the heart.
Veins
Carry blood towards the heart.
