6.32 - Comparing the rates of hydrolysis reactions Flashcards
How can the progress of a hydrolysis reaction be measured?
By using aqueous silver nitrate in ethanol instead of using water
What happens when silver reacts with a halogen?
A precipitate is formed
What does the colour of the silver halide precipitate depend on?
The halogen atom/halide ion
What colour is silver chloride?
White
What colour is silver bromide?
Cream
What colour is silver iodide?
Yellow
Why are reaction with fluoroalkanes usually omitted?
Because the reactions happen incredibly slow
What is the trend in reactivity of halogenoalkanes when the halogen is different?
Fastest -> Slowest
Iodo -> Bromo -> Chloro
Why do iodoalkanes react the quickest?
Because the bond enthalpy of the C-I bond is much lower than that of C-Br and C-Cl bonds, so it is easier to break, meaning I+ ions are formed the easiest, allowing the reaction to happen the quickest
What is the trend in reactivity when the structure of the halogenoalkane is different?
Fastest -> Slowest
Tertiary -> Secondary -> Primary
