6.13 - Functional groups and homologous series Flashcards
What is a functional group?
An atom or group of atoms that gives a compound some distinctive and predictable properties
What is a homologous series?
A set of compounds with the same physical properties, same chemical properties, same functional groups, and that differ by a set amount of atoms from one compound to the next
What is the easy way to remember the names for the first 4 compounds in any homologous series?
Monkeys Eat Peeled Bananas = Meth- Eth- Prop- But-
What is the general formula of alkanes?
CnH2n+2
What is the general formula for alkenes?
CnH2n
What is the general formula for halogenoalkenes?
CnH2n+1X
What is the general formula for alcohols?
CnH2n+1OH
What is the trend for boiling point for alkanes?
As the alkane gets bigger, the boiling point increases
What does this show?
That there are gradual changes in chemical properties for a homologous series
What is the change in the formula for any compound in a homologous series to the next compound?
CH2
